Tutorial 1 - TV Whitespace Technology for Remote Communications

  • Jonathan Brewer, NSRC
  • Television Whitespace Technology (TVWS) is an access innovation which has properties very different to microwave linking bands, and can enable near- and non-line-of-sight communications, allowing connectivity to villages that have never before had broadband. This brief talk will discuss the technology, the radio spectrum, and some case studies of how TVWS has been considered and used to deliver broadband, including the regulatory challenges and equipment development.

Tutorial 2 - Investigating DNS Abuse/Misuse for Law Enforcement Agents

  • Dave Piscitello, VP Security ICANN
  • This workshop exposes agents to strategies, techniques and tools that infosec professionals use to identify abuses of the Domain Name System (DNS), malicious registrations of domain names, addresses or hosting. Through a combination of lecture, demonstration, and hands-on exercises, attendees will learn how to collect information that will be needed to further investigate criminal activity. The tutorial will cover the following:
    • Enumeration of Attacks
    • Challenges of distinguishing criminal from legitimate use of DNS
    • Accessing DNS, domain registration, and IP addressing related information
    • Dealing with domain seizures
    • Tools to collect DNS and registration data
    • Tools to locate and look at hosting sites and hosted data,
    • Reputation tools
    • Examples, use cases, and case studies
